Yoga Equipment: The Yoga Block

It’s a common misconception that there’s no need for props and equipment in yoga (other than a yoga mat, which you really can’t do without). The truth is, yoga employs quite a few accessories. One thing that might catch your attention in a yoga class are the yoga blocks.

Yoga blocks are, well, blocks that are usually made from foam materials, but there are newer versions that have come out that are made from cork and other natural materials. Before, believe it or not, yoga blocks were made from wood or bricks!

Yoga blocks are used to aid a yogi in his or her alignment as certain yoga positions are assumed. They also give some sort of support. Measuring around 9 x 6 x 3 inches, they are light enough to be carried to a yoga class. Many beginning practitioners find yoga blocks helpful in starting out, while advanced yoga students use these blocks for assuming more complicated positions.

Yoga blocks can be purchased in pairs. They are available in a wide variety of colors. But before buying one, try testing the yoga blocks to ensure that they are sturdy enough to support your weight. This way, you can avoid injury to yourself.
